The Car Mom shares her top tech picks for your next car

·4 min read

When it comes time to shop for a new car for the family, we all have our own priorities. There are the essentials to consider: safety, adequate space for your children (and as much of the soccer team as you can fit), plus all the road trip creature comforts you could ask for. But have you thought about what new technology features could make for a smoother ride?

We asked Kelly Stumpe (also known as the Car Mom) to share some of her favorite tech features for families on the go. As a busy mom of two she’s all too familiar with the challenges of choosing a new car for the family. As a car salesperson, she has a front-row seat for all of the new technologies that can help make those family road trips (or just the everyday errands) a little less painful.

Keyless entry

We’ve all been there, the toddler is having a meltdown, the ice cream you just picked up is defrosting by the second and you can’t find your car key in your purse to save your life. Keyless entry is here to help. Just have your key on your person — your pocket, diaper bag or purse — and the car will unlock and start without you having to physically pull out your keys! But wait, there’s more … some keyless entry systems will automatically lock the door behind you, ensuring the car is safely locked behind you as you head out on your day’s adventures. We’d say this kind of peace of mind is everything for busy parents on the go, but it’s so much more.

"Safety is always a priority in the car, and the latest technology can help keep your family even more secure."

Hands-free tailgate

Have you ever found yourself staring down your car door while you wrangle the groceries, a diaper bag and a stroller (not to mention the child inside)? No problem, your hands-free power tailgate has you covered. You can easily open and close the trunk with just your foot or just the press of a button. It’s the perfect perk for when your hands are full (literally and figuratively).

Smartphone integration

Close your eyes and imagine a world where all of the apps on your phone could be instantly transferred to your car dashboard. The future is now. With Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, your phone will automatically sync to your car, turning your infotainment into your cell phone. Easily place hands-free calls, have texts read aloud or turn on your kids’ favorite tunes (or your latest podcast).

Crash prevention technology

Safety is always a priority in the car, and the latest technology can help keep your family even more secure. Features like blind spot and frontal collision warning, emergency rear braking and backup cameras can all work together to keep you and your family safe. Your kids already think you have eyes in the back of your head, now technology can make it happen and help ensure you and your loved ones arrive safely.

Ventilated and heated seats

Is there anything worse than getting back to the car after a fun day in the sun and having to wait 15 minutes for the interior to cool down? And what about those early winter mornings when you finally defrost about the time you make it where you’re going? Whether it’s boiling hot or bitterly cold, comfort is key for those busy days in the car. Keep cool with ventilated seats and keep warm and cozy with the heated. (Bonus: heated seats can be a huge perk for any aches and pains.)

Buckle up

From school runs to errands to summer road trips, you and your family spend a lot of time in your car. The right technology can make all the difference, saving you time and making for a comfortable ride for everyone. As you look for your next car, think about what features could make your life simpler. If you’re comparing several car models, bring your wish list with you and make sure they’ve got what you’re looking for. With the right tech in place, you and your family will be riding in style (and convenience) in no time.
